Afua Hirsch - Courageous Cavendish Conversation

We were thrilled to host a session with Afua Hirsch. The British writer, broadcaster and former barrister spoke to Y5+6 pupils including from nearby Hawley School.

Her wide ranging and fascinating conversation began with a discussion of her own experience of growing up mixed-race in London. She spoke about her work and travels including the making of a number of documentaries focusing on Africa (a second series of African Renaissance has just been commissioned) and her involvement with an African fashion brand, @sikadesigns. Together we explored the history and culture of the continent including its colonisation; considered perceptions of Africa past and present, and gained an understanding of the energy and diversity of Africa today. The audience asked thought-provoking questions and were clearly listening intently and enjoying learning about the richness of Africa.

Afua Hirsch is the latest in our series of guest speakers in our Courageous Cavendish Conversations to introduce pupils to a variety of topics of current interest in the community and the wider world. Recent speakers have included an expert in Artificial Intelligence and the Mayor of Camden.
